A dozen people were injured when a gusty winds brought down a large tree branch at a middle school near Whittier, officials said.
The branch fell around 2:05 p.m. Friday on the football field of Katherine Edwards Middle School in the 6800 block of Norwalk Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Officials say 12 people were hurt, one with moderate injuries and the rest with minor injuries. Only one of them was taken to the hospital, LA County Fire Public Information Officer Pauline McGee said.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who represents the area, posted a photo of the fallen tree branch on X and wrote that all of the victims were children. No ages were provided.
“Thank you to our LA County firefighters, sheriff’s deputies, and school staff who responded quickly and helped care for these,” Hahn wrote. “My prayers are with every child who was injured and their families.”
The city of Whittier said it was aware of the incident, which happened outside the city’s jurisdiction.
“We are in close communication with the Whittier City School District to stay informed and ensure that any affected students who reside in the City of Whittier have access to the support and resources they need,” the city said in a social media post.
The school declined to comment.
